Know Thy Audience!
June 2019
This caveat reminds me of an old Zen tennis saying: “Be the ball.” You must think as though you are the target customer/consumer when writing any marketing content.
Know enough about your ideal customer or prospect that you can write directly to them. This includes demonstrating empathy for their dilemmas and frustrations both large and small that keep them up at night.
What is their company mission statement? How could you help them to achieve their important professional goals?
What if their business was running perfectly? How could you have a hand in that? Now all you have to do is figure out a way to give them some meaningful portion of that ideal scenario.
Having trouble figuring out what your ideal customer needs?
Ask them! It’s easy to set up simple surveys on Survey Monkey and other online tools.

Thanksgiving 2018
My Thanksgiving ‘food for thought’ is favoring quality over cutting corners. In a world with a fear-based mindset, some principals are buying content that is barely comprehensible, let alone exceptional.
But the truth is that business owners can’t afford not to provide quality content. Here is an excerpt from my recent article on spiderseo.la:
Google told us back in 2007 that it had better find quality content when it crawls our sites. Not everyone listened. What has happened to those optimizers? They’re being dragged by the ears back to their cubicles to write content that Google can not only find and rank, but also approve. As SEO slugs it out with Panda, the pendulum swings back to audience value. Website content needs to not only improve, but also become better than that of its competitors. The bottom line is creating an exceptional product.
So the next time you have a writing project, I invite you to hire a writer who delivers business content that engages and excites your readers, time and again.
Happy Thanksgiving,
